While Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is the heart of Madinah, the city is surrounded by historical landmarks that bear witness to the early days of Islam. Visiting these sites offers a deeper connection to the Seerah (life of the Prophet). Here are the top 5 historical sites you should include in your itinerary:

1. Masjid Quba

Masjid Quba is the first mosque built in Islamic history. The Prophet (PBUH) laid its foundation upon his arrival in Madinah during the Hijrah. Offering two rakats of prayer here carries the immense reward of performing an Umrah.

2. Mount Uhud

The site of the second major battle in Islam, Mount Uhud is a place of profound reflection. The Prophet (PBUH) expressed deep love for this mountain. Visitors can pay their respects at the graves of the martyrs, including the Prophet’s uncle, Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib.

3. Masjid al-Qiblatayn

This mosque marks the location where the revelation to change the direction of prayer (Qibla) from Jerusalem to Makkah was received. Its unique architecture historically featured two prayer niches (mihrabs).

4. The Seven Mosques (Al-Masajid As-Sabah)

Located at the site of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq), this complex originally consisted of small mosques where the Prophet (PBUH) prayed during the siege of Madinah.

5. Jannatul Baqi

The primary cemetery of Madinah, located just outside Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. It is the resting place of thousands of the Prophet’s companions, wives, and family members. Visiting Baqi is a sobering reminder of our ultimate return to Allah.

Make sure to allocate a day to explore these historical treasures, as they bring the stories of early Islam vividly to life.
